THE Valley Forge

King of Prussia, Pennsylvania

Postcard 1281

Hi Nomads-- Guess what!? Driving home I saw a sign for "Valley Forge- Next Exit". THE Valley Forge--from my 8th grade history class? Where George Washington's Continental Army camped out through the miserable Winter of 1777-78? The Valley Forge where many of the soldiers died from freezing to death rather than battle? YES-the same one! How could I drive right by? It is a gorgeous area and erected in memory of all the fallen soldiers, is this sole monument in the very field the men died in the fight to establish the United States. What great history-- and only 20 miles from Philly. Home now, planning for the next adventure! Diana

My City

New York, New York

Postcard 1157

Hey again-- I know I send a lot of NYC postcards, but seriously, look at this? Do you blame me? I took this shot from a top top floor of a building where I was very lucky to be on a crisp Winter day in January. Looking uptown, the entire city is viewable with the Empire State Building of course in the center of the shot. I am off to explore and maybe do some ice skating-- it won't be long until the rinks are closed and Spring will be here! Diana

Gingerbread Houses in NYC

New York, New York

Postcard 1073

Hey all-- So here in the "big city" it is possible to find streets that make me feel like I am in a quaint small town. These brownstones have such an interesting and unique facade -- much different from the standard brownstones that surround this Upper West Side neighborhood. Just steps away from these homes are shops, restaurants and the Museum of Natural History. The Upper West Side is definitely a little city within a city—like so many neighborhoods here are. Headed to see some dinosaurs now at the museum... catch you later! Diana

Amish Country

Intercourse, Pennsylvania

Postcard 1011

Before you say anything... I too thought it was a little ironic to be in the heart of Amish country in a city called Intercourse. How can a town with that name not get the imagination going? Farms like this seem to be endless and the traditional Amish uniform of black clothing can be scene drying on the clotheslines at each farm. Driving through Intercourse and the neighboring town 'Bird-in-Hand' can induce feelings of being in another world with the horse drawn carriages and horse drawn plows (those poor horses)! I did stop at one farmhouse where fresh eggs and homemade potholders were known to be quite famous in the town. I bought a dozen eggs... and 8 potholders! I couldn't resist the homemade simpleness! All Purpose Boats

Orenjestad, Aruba

Hello from Orangetown (the English translation of this main city in Dutch-influenced Aruba and named such for the "orange-ish" gold that was discovered there ages ago). These boats served as taxis, cruise boats and fishing boats for the waterways around this city. I tried to rent "Rudy" to take out for a spin, but the boat's owner--Rudy, I am guessing-- politely smiled and with a very appealing Dutch accent said "sorry lady." Ahhh. Bummer. Oh well--its a pretty small city so walking is just as nice--especially in this fabulous weather! Chat later-- Diana
