Chaiwallah

India

Postcard 1214

Cup of Chai, Nomads? This friendly chap served us a cup of that most agreeable of Indian beverages, Chai: a sweet milky tea that is served throughout that great nation and is a personal favourite of your humble author. The vigorous scooping action that you are seeing is repeated multiple times, one presumes to mix the ingredients thoroughly although there is a touch of performance to the action and an integral part of the Chai quaffing experience. Yours With Extra Sugar, Simon

Stuck in Ollantaytambo

Ollantaytambo, Peru

Postcard 1176

If you take the backpacker train to Machu Picchu, you must travel through the town of Ollantaytambo, Peru to catch the train. We arrived with the expectation of being able to hop on a train straight away & visit Machu Picchu the next day. Yeah right, what were we thinking... The next available train was more than 36 hours away so we were "stuck" in Ollantaytambo for nearly two days. To our surprise, this small Incan village was not only gorgeously nestled between 3 mountain peaks, but we arrived in the midst of their annual artisan festival. While there, we were invited by our hostel hosts to participate in the festival and drank the homemade brew (Chicha de Maiz). p.s.: don't drink the Chicha until after Macchu Pichu. Jenneil

Marvelous Molas

San Blas Islands, Panama

Postcard 1152

Christmas, 1999: Hopping on a two-seater (me and the pilot) plane bound for the San Blas Islands (a necklace of tiny islands off the coast of Panama), my trusty pilot suddenly lit up a cigarette and nearly gave me a heart attack: my chin was but 8 inches from the gas tank! By some miracle we managed to make it to the islands without being blown to bits over the Caribbean, and I spent an idyllic week among the indigenous Kuna people. Famous for their unique “Mola” needlework, I happily toted home a treasured collection of their art. Dyanne Kruger

Hiking Hallasan in the Hawaii of Korea

Jeju Island, South Korea

Postcard 1091

Annyeong-haseyo (hello in Korean), Hello from Jeju Island in South Korea. Jeju is South Korea's largest island and is often referred to as the Hawaii of South Korea because it's the go-to place for Korean honeymoons. The island is dominated by Hallasan (Halla Mountain), the largest mountain in South Korea. A great way to spend the day in Jeju is hiking the mountain. It's a full day's hike, but it's a great one. This is a picture of the last quarter of the hike. Jason

Gettin’ Steamy in the Park

Rotorua, New Zealand

Postcard 1068

Kia ora from Rotorua, New Zealand, There is a very distinct, foul smell when you arrive in Rotorua. Think...rotten eggs. Ya. Not pleasant. This scent was intensified when I arrived at the Geothermal Park and Mud Spa. As I walked through the park, steam was rising from the cracks in the earth. Looking down into the mud, it was actually bubbling. I always thought that New Zealand was at the bottom of the world, but this place left me thinking I had arrived at the Earth's. Terrified, the only sensible thing was to cover myself in sulphur smelling mud but that's for another postcard. Cheers, Brock
